A Study of the Holy Spirit – WEEK TWO

I. FIRST MAN – DEATH —> SEPARATION FROM GOD

Ephesians 2:1-2

AND YOU [He made alive], when you were dead (slain) by [your] trespasses and sins

In which at one time you walked [habitually]. You were following the course and fashion of this world [were under the sway of the tendency of this present age], following the prince of the power of the air. [You were obedient to and under the control of] the [demon] spirit that still constantly works in the sons of disobedience [the careless, the rebellious, and the unbelieving, who go against the purposes of God].

The death that is mentioned here is the absence of God and His Life. It is the absence of the one and only Savior of the world Jesus Christ, and it is the absence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the person.

The individual has a spirit, soul, and body but if they were to die in this condition Hell would be there temporary dwelling place until they were place into the lake of fire for all eternity.

Everyone is born into sin (which is called original sin = sin nature). As a human born with a sin nature it nature-al (natural) that we sin. Not only did we sin, we enjoyed it. There was no need for Satan to tempt us, we sought it out.

John 16:7-9

7 However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

8 And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment:

9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me [trust in, rely on, and adhere to Me];

The Holy Spirit works with the church in order to increase the church. He needs us to share the good news of Jesus Christ and He will work on their hearts.

Romans 10:14

But how are people to call upon Him Whom they have not believed [in Whom they have no faith, on Whom they have no reliance]? And how are they to believe in Him [adhere to, trust in, and rely upon Him] of Whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?

II. 2ND MAN – SAVED BY THE SPIRIT, SANCTIFIED (sucker example / set apart for God’s use) BY SELF

We attempt to live this Christian life in our own strength without the help of the Holy Spirit.

The Fight between the flesh and the Spirit

Galatians 5:16-18

But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God).

For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.

But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy] Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.

OUR EXPERIENCES NATURALLY

Romans 7:18-20

17 For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh (ME). I can will what is right, but I cannot perform it. [I have the intention and urge to do what is right, but no power to carry it out.]

18 For I fail to practice the good deeds I desire to do, but the evil deeds that I do not desire to do are what I am [ever] doing.

19 Now if I do what I do not desire to do, it is no longer I doing it [it is not myself that acts], but the sin [principle] which dwells within me [fixed and operating in my soul].

Me is still alive.

Me is still making decision for me.

Me is stilling making plans for me.

Me is still doing my way to please me.

Me MUST DIE TO ME, AND LIVE UNTO GOD.

III. 3RD MAN – VICTORY IN THE SPIRIT

Romans 7:24-25

O unhappy and pitiable and wretched man that I am! Who will release and deliver me from [the shackles of] this body of death?

O thank God! [He will!] through Jesus Christ (the Anointed One) our Lord!
